Who We Are

We are Jonathon and Nicholas Mercury. We grew up reading LOTR and Narnia, and we live and breathe fantasy. A couple of blue-collar guys from Michigan, we've been working full-time since we were kids, cutting grass and laying wire, and now we want to work harder than ever to bring games to life for folks like you.

Or Become a Knight of the Order of the Raven

200 numbered places. A letter in the mail every month, a token, name a character, and a copy of the game.

FAQs: Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. Cancel anytime and you keep everything already sent to you — you just won't be charged again. Skipped or paused months don’t count toward your year, and no letter is mailed for a skipped month.

What do I get right away?

The moment you join, you get the short story "Gallows March" (readable on any eReader), an invite to the members' room, and your name added to the Roll of the Order. Order of the Raven members also get their membership number. The monthly dispatch arrives on its regular date — if you join just after one goes out, your first one may be a few weeks away, and we'd rather tell you that than surprise you.

What's the difference between the two tiers?

Knights of the Order ($15) get the story, the members' room, the monthly dispatch, first look at new cards, and a vote on what we build.

Knights of the Raven's Round Table ($50) get all of that plus a numbered membership, a physical letter mailed every month, a token sent once on joining, and the chance to name a character in the game. Members in good standing for 12 consecutive months qualify for a copy of King of Calabrion when it's manufactured, as well as coupons for free games mailed at regular intervals as more and more games are produced.

Why are there only 200 Raven Knight places?

Because Jonathon writes every letter himself—yeah, no AI slop—and Nicholas addresses every one by hand. Two hundred is roughly an evening a month, which we can sustain for years. A thousand is a job we'd quietly start resenting, and you'd get a worse letter. The cap is there so the thing we're promising stays good.

The even bigger reason: Knights of the Order of the Raven are the best of the best. These are the guys that showed up before King of Calabrion was a big deal. These are the knights of a new order, and not everyone belongs. Something big like this? If it was open to everyone it wouldn't mean anything to anyone.

Will the price go up?

For new members, yes — the price rises as places fill, and the announced increases are real. What you pay when you join is what you keep paying for as long as you stay a member. If you cancel and come back later, you rejoin at whatever the price is then.

Will there be a Kickstarter, and do I still need to back it?

Almost certainly yes, and we'd love to see you there. Order of the Raven membership includes a copy of the game, so you don't need to back it to receive one — but the campaign is where the stretch goals, the extras and the launch itself happen, and members of the Order hear about all of it first.

Here's the part worth knowing. Every dollar of membership money is a dollar we don't have to raise from somewhere with strings attached. Most games this size get made by signing away the rights to a publisher, and we are not doing that. A crowdfunding platform also takes about 8.6% off the top before we see a cent, and we'd rather that money went into artwork. Enough of us paying every month and King of Calabrion gets made on our terms by the two of us — and you get a say in what it becomes.

What if the game is delayed?

It probably will be, at least a little. Everything I know about this industry says so, and I'd rather say it now than send you an apologetic email in eighteen months. What won't be delayed is the thing you're actually paying for: the story, the dispatch, the letter, the look behind the curtain. The game arrives when it's good.

Where does the money go?

Art. There are over a hundred pieces of original, high-quality artwork in King of Calabrion, none of it generated by a machine, all of it paid for. Your membership is not nearly enough money to cover that — but it's real money arriving every month from people who want this to exist, and that's what keeps the commissions going out.

How does the letter work?

It's printed, folded, and addressed by hand, with your membership number on it, and mailed every month to the address on your order. If you move, update your address in your account and it follows you. Order of the Raven only.

What happens if you fail?

Fair question, and the honest answer is that nobody gets a guarantee from a company this small. What I can tell you is what you're owed and when: the story is yours the day you join, each dispatch is sent before the next charge, and you can stop paying the second you stop getting value. You're never more than one month ahead of what's already been delivered.
